Implementing lean manufacturing and demand-pull production methods in process industries is often complicated by equipment that was not originally designed for flexibility, rapid changeover and small lot production. Quite the contrary, equipment capabilities and process technologies often dictate that products are produced in batches or “campaigns”, which are subsequently subdivided to package or fill various order sizes at a customer level.
